French President Emmanuel Macron set the tone for the nation’s EU presidency, outlining a platform to leverage European cooperation, power, and sovereignty to drive the environmental and digital transitions and revitalize the economy by 2030. The French presidency advocates strongly for European technological sovereignty and supports economic recovery, value creation, and jobs through robust domestic industries spanning tech-intensive fields like hydrogen, batteries, semiconductors, space, cloud computing, defense, and health. These industries, which align closely with the CEA’s programs, will play a fundamental role in our world by 2030.

Europe’s target of carbon neutrality by 2050 is also front and center during the French presidency, with a proposed carbon import tax designed to balance the EU’s aspirations for its industrial economy with climate concerns. The geopolitical crises affecting Europe are also being addressed, through a proposed European defense and weapons strategy outlined in an EU white paper. During France’s six-month presidency, the CEA is participating in the Europe-wide public debate on these issues and providing expert insights on all the topics concerned.

Specifically, the CEA is regularly leading and/or participating in events around France’s platform, and engaging with French and EU government institutions, elected officials, research organizations, academic institutions, and industrial stakeholders.

CEA-List is co-organizing one such event, a conference entitled “AI for Industry and Society: Trust and Frugality” to be held in Brussels on February 25, 2022, with CNRS and INRIA.

The day will offer up presentations of some of the initiatives already up and running in France and at the EU level to provide attendees with an overview of the European Commission’s and European stakeholders’ takes on the issues surrounding artificial intelligence. The goal is to facilitate new relationships within the research community and enable resource-sharing through the creation of open innovation platforms to support trusted, sustainable AI development in service to EU citizens.
